Gemma and Serena: the Enduring Power of Friendship
Gemma and her horse Serena, a Welsh chestnut mare, share a remarkable story of friendship and equestrian partnership. Their journey began when Serena was just a year old, a raw and unhandled filly grazing in a field. As a 13th birthday present, Serena was brought home to Gemma, marking the start of a lifelong bond.
Gemma as a teenager took on the challenge of backing and training Serena herself. From the very beginning, it was clear that there was a special connection between the two. Serena, despite her young age, proved to be a quick learner and a willing partner.
Together, Gemma and Serena ventured into various equestrian disciplines. They competed in jumping, cross country, showing, and dressage, each event showcasing their unique talents. While all disciplines were enjoyable, jumping and cross country were Serena's true passions. Her bravery, strength, and athleticism shone brightest in these events.
Serena's trust in Gemma was unwavering. She would follow her rider into any situation, her confidence and obedience a testament to their strong bond. Despite her loving nature, Serena had a cheeky streak and a playful personality. She was always up for an adventure and has a certain fondness for Milkybar chocolate, which came in handy during their photoshoot.
As Serena aged, Gemma made the difficult decision to retire her from competition. While it was a bittersweet moment, it allowed them to focus on enjoying their time together in a more relaxed setting. Their bond remained as strong as ever, and Serena continued to be a loyal and loving companion.
Gemma chose to capture these special moments with Serena to honour their bond and lifelong friendship. Serena was a pro once she settled into the shoot and we captured some beautiful images just on the yard where Serena is kept.
The story of Gemma and Serena is a heartwarming reminder of the special connection that can develop between a rider and their horse. It's a tale of dedication, trust, and the enduring power of friendship.
